Empowering Disaster Resilience and Local Communities in the Himalayas

MFH Facilitates Enhanced Disaster Resilience through the Mountain Relief Network

Mountain Forum Himalayas (MFH) plays a pivotal role in facilitating processes within the Mountain Relief Network (MRN), an initiative focused on strengthening disaster resilience in the Indian Himalayan Region (IHR). With a robust network of over 115 member organizations, MRN is essential in providing timely disaster relief, rehabilitation, and post-relief support.

MRN acts as a crucial platform for local, national, and international agencies, enabling aid delivery within 24-48 hours of a disaster. This proactive approach ensures that relief operations are timely, accurate, and effective, particularly in the face of severe climate change impacts on the Himalayan ecosystem.

MRN has systematically mapped the region and established local focal organisations (partners) equipped to conduct rapid damage assessments and coordinate relief efforts. These focal points optimize aid distribution, ensuring that assistance reaches the most affected communities quickly and efficiently. Beyond immediate relief, MFH through MRN collaborates with local partners and donors to foster ongoing rehabilitation and development initiatives.

Empowering the Northern Himalayas: The Role of MFH in the Mountain Collective Processes

Mountain Forum Himalayas (MFH) plays a pivotal role in empowering the Northern Himalayas through its facilitation of the Mountain Collective and Mountain HUB processes. Launched in December 2012, the Mountain Collective serves as a transformative multi-stakeholder platform that brings together grassroots organizations, civil society networks, and dedicated individuals from Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

This coalition effectively addresses pressing regional issues such as climate change, rural employment, river conservation, forest fire prevention, and women’s empowerment.

Through the Mountain Collective, MFH has successfully spearheaded impactful campaigns, including the Save River Movement and the Millets Movement, while also promoting initiatives like water conservation and the seed ball campaign. The Collective’s robust alliance, comprising 115 voluntary organizations, 21 grassroots entities, 23 subject experts, and 13 institutions, exemplifies MFH's commitment to leveraging local expertise and fostering sustainable development in marginalized communities across the region.
